Understanding BMR

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories required to keep your body functioning at rest. It represents the minimum energy needed for vital functions like breathing, blood circulation, controlling body temperature, cell growth, and brain and nerve function.

Which Formula Is Used?

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to estimate BMR. It is considered more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict equation. The formulas are:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What's the difference between BMR and TDEE?

BMR is the calories you burn in a coma-like state (at rest). TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your BMR plus all the extra calories you burn from any physical activity, from walking around to intense exercise. TDEE is always higher than BMR unless you are completely sedentary.

Can I increase my BMR?

Yes. The most effective way to increase your BMR is by building more muscle mass. Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest compared to fat tissue. Regular strength training can help boost your metabolism over time.
